City of Hamilton wins AMO award for Woodward
Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment Centre
Toronto, Ontario, August 28, 2008 -- The City of
Hamilton has received an AMO P.J. Marshall Plaque Award for excellence
in innovation for the Woodward Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment
Facility. This is one of the largest-scale examples of biogas
cogeneration in Canada. The award was presented to Mayor Fred
Eisenberger, Councillor Russ Powers and Jim Harnum, Senior Director,
Waste and Wastewater at the 2008 Association of Municipalities of
Ontario Conference in Ottawa on August 26, 2008.
“This plaque is awarded to projects that strongly exhibit all
of the awards criteria – innovation, tangible benefits, measured
improved efficiency and effectiveness, use of innovative financing and
transferability,” says Peter Hume, AMO President. “The
City of Hamilton’s biogas cogeneration facility at the Woodward
Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment Facility has environmental, public
health and cost saving benefits that can be applied elsewhere in
Ontario.”
The water and wastewater facility uses the biogas, a by-product of
the wastewater treatment process, to generate 16.4 million kilowatt
hours of clean, renewable electricity, and to eliminate about 60,000
tonnes of green house gas emissions.
“The City of Hamilton is extremely pleased to accept this award
on behalf of all those who have had a part in this enormous
project,” said Fred Eisenberger, Mayor of the City of
Hamilton.
The P.J. Marshall Award is an annual competitive process organized by
AMO. Awards acknowledge municipalities who have demonstrated
leadership and innovation in public-private partnerships.
Submissions by Ontario municipalities are judged by a panel on their
creativity and success in implementing new, innovative ways of serving
the public. This year a Certificate of Merit and a Plaque were
awarded.
AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of
Ontario’s 445 municipal governments. AMO supports strong and
effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of
municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and
Canada’s political system.
