Grand Opening of Hamilton's Revitalized City
Hall Attracts 1000 Residents
Following an extensive renovation process, the City of
Hamilton celebrated the revitalization of Hamilton City Hall at a grand
re-opening event on June 22nd. Close to 1000 community members
came out to catch a glimpse of the renovated heritage building and enjoy
local entertainment. The event also featured tasty foods, official
remarks and public tours of the building.
Featuring a green roof and a number of energy saving
features, the renovated City Hall is expected to reduce energy
consumption by 35%. This represents an estimated savings of
$233,000 per year. In addition, the renovations are expected to reduce
water use by 10-15% and Greenhouse Gas emissions by 50%.
The total cost of renovations was $74 million.
$30.7 million was provided through the federal Gas Tax Fund and an
additional $25 million was provided through the Province’s
investing in Ontario funding. Under the Federal Gas Tax Agreement,
municipalities are required to promote the local benefits of the funding
they receive. Hamilton’s efforts earned local print and
television news coverage and demonstrated the importance of this stable
funding to a broad range of Hamilton residents.
