To keep members informed, AMO provides updates on important issues considered at regular AMO Board of Directors’ meetings. Highlights of the June 2008 Board meeting follow:
Update on AMO Annual Conference 2008

The Board received an update on planning for the upcoming AMO Annual Conference. The Board was advised that this year has seen an increased number of registrations to date and that the Premier of Ontario, the Leader of the PC Party and the Leader of the NDP, have confirmed their attendance.

MPAC Update

The Board received an update from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) regarding the implementation of the Ombudsman’s recommendations, changes to property assessment notices for 2008, as well as general trends and developments that will impact assessment in the future.

Changes to Human Rights Legislation

The Board received an update on the introduction of a new system for managing human rights complaints in Ontario and the associated impacts for municipal employers.

Blue Box Continuous Improvement Fund (CIF) Update

The Board received an update on the new governance structure for the management of the Continuous Improvement Fund (CIF). Developed through Waste Diversion Ontario, AMO, the City of Toronto, and Stewardship Ontario, the CIF comprises 20% of the annual financial obligations of the stewards to municipalities for blue box funding. The CIF Governance Board will include representation from AMO.

Blue Box: Status of Municipal Household and Special Waste Program

The Board received an update on the status of the Municipal Household and Special Waste (MHSW) agreements with municipalities, which delineate industry and municipal responsibilities for the costs associated with managing household hazardous waste. The MHSW Program Plan begins July 1st, 2008.

Federal Gas Tax: Outcomes Report

A full Outcomes Report will be published by September 30th, 2009, which will outline the results achieved over the first three years of the agreement. AMO will continue to work to secure agreements for permanent sharing of gas tax revenue.
