Toronto, Ont., April 27, 2001. A survey released by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario rates the municipal relationship with Queen’s Park as unsatisfactory and that the Province is on the wrong track.
This report indicates that the relationship is in need of repair,” AMO President Ann Mulvale said.“ Municipal leaders feel the Province does not trust our ability to make decisions for our communities – the very people who elected us.”

A clear majority feels that the Province has a plan for the municipal order of government and that it is on the wrong track.  Almost 75% have rated the relationship “unsatisfactory” and when asked if the Province is communicating properly with municipalities, 88% responded “No.”

There were suggestions for improving relations, including delivering on the ‘new deal’ announced last August and a new Municipal Act, which has been promised since 1996.  “If this relationship is to work, Provincial actions must mirror the words,” said President Mulvale.

The survey also had some tough news for the Association.  64% said that AMO needed to be more forceful in advocating municipal interests.  “Our members have indicated that they want AMO to take a stronger position in standing up for municipal property taxpayers.  The AMO Board will be doing just that,” said President Mulvale. “We need the Province to sit down with us and together build a positive plan of action.”

AMO is a non-profit organization with member municipalities representing 98 per cent of Ontario’s population.
