Toronto, ON., April 24, 2003. The AMO Executive passed a resolution today supporting the City of Toronto and other municipalities affected by SARS in response to the growing alarmist reaction to the World Health Organization’s travel advisory announcement.

AMO has asked the Premier to contact other provincial leaders to seek their understanding and support of Ontario – that we are a safe, healthy and vibrant place to visit and do business.

As the extraordinary costs of SARS is having significant impacts on municipal budgets, services and economic growth, AMO is seeking financial support.  AMO is also urging the Federal Government to step in and work with the province and municipalities on an “economic recovery” plan as the impacts in Ontario will be felt across the country.

Ken Boshcoff, the President of AMO, attended Toronto Council today to deliver the message of support from AMO and said in his remarks, “AMO stands with Toronto and our other members affected by SARS.

Municipal leaders recognize that Toronto and the GTA is the nation’s economic engine and everyone should be supportive.  AMO representatives from all over the Province are here, with confidence.  We are here responsibly taking the advice of professional medical practitioners that Toronto is a safe place to be.”

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is a non-profit organization with member municipalities representing 98 per cent of Ontario’s population.  AMO supports and enhances strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political system.
