TORONTO, August 22, 2006 – The City of Peterborough has been honoured with a Peter J. Marshall Innovation Award for Peterborough’s Sports and Wellness Centre, a state-of-the-art fitness facility funded in partnership with Sir Sanford Fleming College
The award was presented to Mayor Sylvia Sutherland and Councillor Shirley Eggleton at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference in Ottawa on August 15. 

“The P.J. Marshall Award recognizes leaders and innovative practices that improve municipal programs, services and efficiencies for the benefit of the communities they serve,” said Doug Reycraft, President of AMO.  “The energy efficient Sports and Wellness Centre stands out because it provides for the active living needs of the community at low cost to taxpayers.”  

The new Centre offers 500 programs per week, large fitness and aquatic facilities, and community rooms.  However its operating costs are less than the smaller aquatic centre that preceded it.  The savings are due to energy conservation measures and an innovative 50-year partnership which divides costs equally between the City of Peterborough and Sir Sandford Fleming Student Administrative Council.  The facility uses 40 per cent less energy than comparable buildings.   
“This award is special because the project was not universally supported at first,” said Mayor Sutherland.   “Not everyone believed we would succeed with such a major undertaking this quickly and affordably.  This award confirms that we were right to believe in the project.”

The P.J. Marshall Award is an annual competitive process, with submissions by Ontario municipalities that are judged on their creativity and success in implementing new, innovative ways of serving the public. 

AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 445 municipal governments.  AMO supports and enhances strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political system.
