Toronto, Ontario, August 28, 2008. Durham Region’s Material Recovery Facility received an AMO Federal Gas Tax Project Award.
The award was presented to Regional Chair Roger Anderson by Federal Environment Minister John Baird and Past AMO’s President Doug Reycraft at the 2008 Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference in Ottawa on August 26.

“This facility will reduce Durham’s carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30,000 metric tonnes annually,” said Roger Anderson.  “It will make good use of material that people throw away and reduce pressure on our landfills.  That’s good news for the environment and for taxpayers.”

“Durham region deserves credit for the leadership it has shown,” said Doug Reycraft, AMO’s Immediate Past President.  “Municipalities in other parts of the province have taken note of this facility as we all look for ways to better serve residents and our environment.”

The $16.6 million Materials Recovery Facility is owned by the Region and operated by Metro Municipal Recycling Services Inc.  Completed with an $11.2 million contribution from the Federal Gas Tax Fund, the waste management facility can process up to 110,000 tonnes annually.  It sorts the Region’s curbside Blue Box recyclables into high-quality metals, plastics and papers, which are sold directly to industrial buyers.

AMO Federal Gas Tax Project Awards recognize leadership and innovation in infrastructure projects.

The Federal Gas Tax Fund was announced in the 2005 Federal Budget.  Municipalities can apply the funding to infrastructure projects that promote cleaner water, cleaner air, or reduced greenhouse gas emissions.  The fund is distributed among Ontario’s municipalities based on population and is estimated to bring an additional $2.9 billion to Ontario communities.

AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 445 municipal governments.  AMO supports strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political system.
