Niagara Falls, Ontario, August 18, 2015 – The Village of South River’s LED Streetlight Upgrade Project has won an AMO Gas Tax Award.

Gary McNamara, AMO President, presented the award today to Sherri Hawthorne, South River’s Treasurer, on the main stage at the AMO Annual Conference.

The AMO Gas Tax Award honours municipalities that have demonstrated excellence in the use of the federal Gas Tax Fund. Winning projects improve local quality of life by making a difference in our communities, while achieving the Fund’s objectives.

“Replacing our streetlights with energy efficient LED luminaires has helped South River save money on electricity and maintenance costs,” said Jim Coleman, Mayor of South River. “The new streetlights use less energy and also reduce CO2 emissions, which is not only good for South River, it will also help reduce the carbon footprint in Ontario and in Canada. We’re proud to be honoured with an AMO Gas Tax Award.”

The upgrade project was long overdue as the existing streetlight network included mercury vapor and high pressure sodium fixtures. The cost of electricity to operate the lights and the cost to maintain the fixtures was growing year after year. The new LED streetlights resulted in a cost savings of 72.83% in electricity alone, more than originally projected. The new lights have also saved 107,776 kilowatt-hours of energy.

“South River has realized cost savings, a reduction in CO2 emissions and lower energy consumption thanks to the federal Gas Tax Fund,” said Gary McNamara, AMO President. “Investing in energy efficient local infrastructure will benefit South River residents for years to come.”

The federal Gas Tax Fund is one of the only permanent and stable sources of funding for municipal infrastructure. It provides Ontario municipalities with $744 million per year of entitlement based funding. AMO delivers the Fund to all Ontario municipalities, except Toronto, twice a year, on a per capita basis. It is invested in infrastructure that makes our communities safer, more efficient and prosperous. The City of Stratford also received a 2015 AMO Gas Tax Award for its asset management plan.
