On December 13, 2010, the Ministry of Finance announced changes to property tax treatment of farm bunkhouses. Farm bunkhouses are used as residential accommodation, mostly by migrant farm works during the harvest.
The reclassification of these buildings from “residential” to “farm” will mean an erosion of the rural property tax base.  A conservative estimate of the province-wide municipal tax loss is $350,000.  The result is a reallocation of the tax burden to other property classes including farm residences.
