The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing has been mandated by the Premier to undertake a review of the Municipal Elections Act to ensure it “provides municipalities with the option of using ranked ballots in future elections, starting in 2018, as an alternative to first-past-the-post.”

Municipal governments are to have the flexibility in what method to use. This primer is to provide some information on how ranked ballot voting works and where it is used.

AMO has also prepared a submission to the Minister with recommendations for changes to the Act, as well as advice on implementation of RBV.
