It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Ron Nelson, Mayor of the Township of O’Connor and a dedicated member of both the Northern Ontario Municipal Association and AMO Board of Directors.

Ron spent the bulk of his career in forestry, an industry that fueled his professional and political path.  He was elected as township councillor in 1991 and, in 1994, became head of council. He was acclaimed in 2014, which marked his seventh term as Mayor.  One of Ron’s most cherished achievements was the establishment of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine – a legacy that is another northern treasure.

Ron was passionate about his ‘north’ and his devotion to making it an even better slice of heaven was unwavering. He was the bumper sticker that says if you want something done, then find the busiest person to help.  ‘No’ was not a part of his vocabulary – provided he could wear his blue jeans!

At the AMO Board, Ron never shied from saying what he thought, straight up and often along the way installing a bit of humour. Ron always brought the north south with him, bridging an understanding that strengthened public policy. His fellow board members knew his aspirations for municipal government and that the success of any part of the province rested with the strength of all of its pieces.  Ron was a fiery dude with a twinkle in his eye.  He will be truly missed by the AMO Board, staff and all who had a chance to work with him.

There is no doubt he is organizing a northern hospitality suite with those that have gone before him.  Our thoughts are with his family.
