Long Term Energy Plan

Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP)

The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) was given the legislated mandate in 2005 of ensuring a reliable, sustainable and cost-effective electricity system. The development of a long-term plan is central to that mandate. In 2007, the OPA produced a detailed Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP I) as a guide for the province’s electricity sector for the next 20 years. The IPSP is intended to be a living document that constantly looks 20 years ahead and is updated to respond to changes in such things as consumer demand, changing generation technology and evolving economic conditions. The OPA is now developing the 2011 Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP II) which builds on the Long Term Energy Plan produced by the Ministry of Energy in the fall of 2010.

The Province’s 20-year energy plan, Building Our Clean Energy Future, has been developed to ensure that Ontario can meet the needs of an evolving economy and shifting electricity demands, while providing affordable electricity. The plans calls for $87 billion dollars of investment in the energy system over the next 20 years, including programs and projects that will directly affect the municipal sector.
