The Federal Government fulfilled its commitment in Budget 2007 to
extend Federal Gas Tax Funding for an additional four years. This
provides municipalities in Canada with an additional $2 billion per year
from 2010 to 2014 for a total of $8 billion nationally under the
Building Canada Plan.
Municipalities in Ontario will see predictable entitlement based funding
of approximately $746 million per year which will help them continue to
address the estimated annual infrastructure deficit of $6 billion.
The allocations for
2010 to 2014 will be based on population data provided by the 2006
Census. This is estimated to bring an additional $2.9 Billion to
Ontario’s communities between 2010 and 2014.
The process for reflecting the extended funds in Gas Tax Agreements is
currently being finalized and AMO will communicate with all
municipalities as soon as specific municipal allocations are known.
The Federal Gas Tax Fund was originally announced in the 2005 Federal
Budget and committed approximately $1.9 billion to Ontario
municipalities for environmentally sustainable infrastructure over a
five year period (2005-2010).
Municipalities can apply funding to infrastructure projects that promote
cleaner water, cleaner air, or reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Predictable, long-term and entitlement-based, funding is helping Ontario
municipalities plan for environmental sustainability and address a
massive, province-wide infrastructure deficit.
