AMO would like to thank all applicants for their submissions! Stay tuned for the Fellows to be announced in January, 2020.

The AMO Youth Fellows Program will provide three politically engaged young adults in Ontario who are interested in municipal politics with an opportunity to engage with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). AMO is a non-partisan non-profit representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments. Our mandate is to make municipal governments stronger and more effective by working together and addressing common challenges. The AMO Youth Fellows program is the centrepiece of AMO’s Youth Engagement Strategy. AMO is committed to encouraging young people to get involved in municipal government and to run for local council.

Through this exciting Fellowship, participants will learn more about municipal politics, policy, and governance while gaining exposure to real-time issues facing Ontario’s municipalities. The eight-month Fellowship will begin in January 2020 and end at the AMO Conference in Ottawa. It is intended to complement full-time studies or work. The Fellows will receive an honorarium of $1,500 each for their participation in the AMO Youth Fellows Program. Travel and accommodation to Board meetings and conferences will also be funded by AMO.

As part of the experience, AMO Fellows will:
  • Participate in AMO Board Meetings in Toronto and Parry Sound (4 meetings)
  • Contribute to the work of an AMO Task Force alongside municipal officials (2-3 meetings)
  • Receive mentorship from an elected official on the AMO Board
  • Attend municipal conferences and events
  • Receive access to AMO’s online educational offerings
  • Create a deliverable of the Fellows’ choosing in time for the AMO Conference
  • Network with municipal and provincially elected officials and senior staff from across Ontario
Time commitment: The time commitment will vary week to week depending on intermittent meetings (5-10 hours a month). The Fellows will also be asked to be present for the duration of the AMO Conference (August 15-19th, 2020).
