Sharmila Setaram Biography

My name is Sharmila Setaram, and I am seeking re-election to the AMO Board of Directors.

I currently serve as a Welland City Councillor, representing approximately 10,000 residents in a growing city of more than 56,000. I am also a member of the AMO Board of Directors, the Ontario Small Urban Municipalities (OSUM) Executive Committee, the Downtown Welland BIA Board of Management, and the Welland Arts & Culture Advisory Committee.

During my first term on the AMO Board, I have contributed to discussions on housing, infrastructure, finance, governance, and community services. I have also worked to increase awareness of AMO's advocacy by regularly sharing Board updates, policy developments, and meeting outcomes through social media.

In January 2025, I joined the OSUM Executive Committee and was recently acclaimed for the 2026–2028 term. Through my service on the AMO Board and OSUM Executive Committee, I have seen firsthand the value of diverse municipal perspectives in shaping effective advocacy and practical solutions.

As municipalities face growing financial pressures, service delivery demands, governance challenges, and potential restructuring discussions, I am committed to ensuring local governments have a strong voice in shaping Ontario's future. I would be honoured to continue serving on the AMO Board.
