New Councillor Training
AMO’s iconic New Head of Councillor Training and New Councillor Training is back. AMO has modernized its training to reflect the realities, responsibilities, challenges and opportunities of municipally elected officials in today’s context.
AMO understands the complexities of local leadership and is providing the knowledge, skills and tools that are required for success through our updated training. Delivered by experienced Chief Administrative Officers, Jim Pine and Tony Haddad, AMO’s New Head of Council and New Councillor Training also features subject matter experts where critical insights will be gained to help you in managing diverse aspects and expectations on issues that you will find before throughout your term.
The demanding arena of municipal politics requires you to be up-to-date on issues (many!) and have the skills and insight to manage expectations and relations, while delivering on strategies and commitments in a relatively short period of time. This is a tall order. AMO’s New Councillor Training provides the foundations and insights to support you as you take on the role of local leader. AMO’s training also provides the opportunity to meet, learn and grow with colleagues from across Ontario.

- Insight into need-to-know legislation and policy

- The fiscal responsibilities, and realities of municipalities
- Financial Reporting and asset management
- Human rights and equity
- And more
This one-day workshop will be offered virtually.

A $75.00 cancellation fee applies
Participation is limited to 30 per session.
All in-class courses can also be offered as customized in-house sessions for individual councils and municipal staff.

About our Facilitators:
Jim Pine has 32 years experience as a CAO, a City Manager and for the past 20 as CAO of Hastings County. Jim’s experience includes a decade with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and housing in a variety of roles including Regional Director for Eastern Ontario. Jim was a member of the expert panel on a review of Ontario’s water and waste water sector and recently was appointed Special Advisor to the Minister of Health on a review of Public Health and Emergency Health Services (interrupted by the pandemic). Jim’s training experience includes as an instructor for AMCTO’s Municipal Administration Program.
Tony Haddad’s municipal experience includes roles as CAO, General Manager, Deputy Treasurer, Director and Senior Manager in financial administration, budgets, governance and public transit. Tony is a past Director with the Ontario Municipal Administrators Association (OMAA), Co-chair of the ONWARD Initiative and is a past President of the Association of Managers, Clerks & Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO). Community service includes President of the Circle of Seven, Co-chair of Transform Shared Services and Treasurer of Sun County Minor Hockey. He is also the recipient of the 2016 Alumni of Distinction Award from St. Clair College and the 2017 Prestige Award from AMCTO.
Tony was the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Town of Tecumseh from 2007 – 2019 (retired).
Tony has engaged in a number of interim-CAO roles including in Amhertsburg and Chatham-Kent.
Jim and Tony will be joined by subject matter experts and organizational representatives in the delivery of the training.
