Important decisions are made daily around municipal council tables and horseshoes. From the services and infrastructure municipalities rely on every day like roads, recreation and public safety to the issues community members care deeply about like housing, homelessness, the environment and much more.
Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, fewer people are running for office to help make those decisions. And fewer people are marking their ballot during municipal elections with voter turnout in the last election down to 32.9%.
To help address those challenges AMO has launched the “When You Believe, They Believe” province-wide campaign developed through AMO’s Healthy Democracy Project. The campaign shines a light on the leadership everyday Ontarians already demonstrate, how that leadership can grow into municipal leadership, and the vital role voting plays in shaping local communities.
Let’s work together—our opportunity
Ontario communities are full of people with the passion and skills to lead. Too many people who want to serve assume they don’t have the resume required to lead locally. Often someone needs to tell them it can be them, now is the time, and here’s what you need to do.
Together we can equip candidates and voters with the motivation and tools to lower barriers. By sparking participation now, we can build healthier local democracies for the future.
